NetSquared Camps: A Pilot in Convening Locally

When we launched the NetSquared conference in 2005, our premise was simple.  We set out to produce an event that brought together people working in the public and private sector who were interested in the potential of web-based tools and strategies to transform the way entrepreneurial nonprofits and social innovators operate.  The conference, held at Cisco’s headquarters in the heart of Silicon Valley, brought together around 300 people from foundations, corporate developer networks, and entrepreneurial social innovators working at the intersection of technology and social–change

Entrepreneurship Summer Camp in Zimbabwe

After going through the economic crisis, I believe every Zimbabwean does not need a lesson on shortages. We had a first hand experience on what it means to walk through empty shelves and spend long hours in queues for simple things such as bread, sugar to fuel. People travelled unimaginable distances just to do grocery shopping.

Africa Gathering is coming to Nairobi in December 2009

Africa Gathering: Sharing ideas for positive change.

What is Africa Gathering?
Africa Gathering, the event that brings technophiles, thinkers, entrepreneurs, innovators and everybody else together to talk about positive change in sustainable development, technology, social networking, health, education, environment and good governance in Africa, is coming to Nairobi on 21st and 22nd December 2009.

Our goal is to help highlight all of the great work being done in the world by Africans and friends of Africa. We are even able to help budding innovators and entrepreneurs by putting the profits of our events in to some the projects that our attendees like the most, this way we live out our ideal of sustainability without charity.

As a result, by attending you are not only directly supporting some of Africa's most innovative entrepreneurs and innovators, you are able to meet, network and share ideas with them - helping build confidence and develop interest in Africa-focussed initiatives and businesses. Everyone can benefit from this enlightening experience.

The Extraordinaries: innovative iPhone initiative turns spare time into volunteer time

I remember meeting Ben Rigby at the first Mobile Active convergence in Toronto quite a few years ago now, and being struck by his innovative and bold ideas. He was then in the process of developing mobilevoter.org, a clever new initiative to use mobile phones to encourage people to register to vote. This is a big issue in America, where so many young people tend to be apathetic about politics and don't even register to vote, let alone go to the polls to cast a ballot.

Now he has teamed up with Jacob Colker to create The Extraordinaries, offering what they call "On-Demand Volunteerism by Mobile Phone". This initiative, powered by an iPhone application, will be only available in the US, but I could imagine this type of innovating having terrific potential in Africa where logistical conditions make volunteering of any kind very challenging indeed. When I wrote to ask about it, the response from Jacob was "I think it's going to be about a year before people can download the application internationally, but we DO want to go worldwide with this asap! Please watch our email newsletters for updates. Glad to know we have people that may be interested in Africa." What kind of mobile phone volunteering could you imagine happening in Africa within the next few years?

Recycling, rebuilding mobile phones

Tobias calls for African to take possession of African Wikipedia. This report asks whether it is possible for  Africans to take possession of mobile phone technology by recycling, rebuilding and reselling mobile phones.   The development of a "Dual Sim Card" is a great step for those who have to use multiple carriers due to connectivity issues.
