Great guidelines for meetings we should all insist on! Advice from Seth Godin's blog: How to organize a retreat

Below is an incredibly helpful list of advice from Seth Godin's blog that I think are relevant to any kind of meeting. I would love to see these ideas tried out at gatherings of Kabissa members. What do you think?

How to organize a retreat

(actually, to steal a phrase from Alan and Bill, an advance. Retreat is too negative).

Seattle Film Maker to visit Tanmia and Time To Get Online workshop participants in Morocco en route to Ghana

Zack Tucker Gagnes, the Seattle film student who is scheduled to film a Kabissa Meetup on Sept 23 in Kumasi, Ghana, is also visiting Morocco. We are very pleased about this development, since it means that through him we are able to catch up with organisations we worked with in Rabat and Marrakesh in 2005.

Kabissa meetups update - and request for input

In October, I posted to the meetups group: Kickstarting the Kabissa meetups in Ibadan, Enugu, Kisumu and Kampala

Since then the meetups have been slower in kicking off than hoped, largely because of lack of capacity on this end to steward the process along. Hopefully I will have some more news to share very soon about that, but in the meantime quite a few new people are signing up for this group and are interested in meetups so I wanted to check in with everyone.

So let me say: Welcome, everyone! I'm glad you are here and would love to see some meetups starting to happen around Africa (and indeed the world...). Here are some things you can do to help make this happen:

  • read all about meetups and ambassadors in the Kabissa guide at http://www.kabissa.org/learn/about/kabissa/meetups
  • add a blog post to the meetups blog to let us know about yourself, where you are and what you are working on - and how you'd like to participate in a meetup in your community
  • update your personal profile page to include your picture and some information about yourself and what you hope to get out of participating in the Kabissa community for yourself, and your organisation
  • consider joining - and posting in - some of the other Kabissa organic groups that you might be interested in, such as website hosting, bloggers, and trainers. see the CONNECT menu for links to those groups.

Thanks!

Tobias

Kickstarting the Kabissa meetups in Ibadan, Enugu, Kisumu and Kampala

As a member of the Kabissa Meetups group, you no doubt know that we have been developing this scheme since March to encourage Kabissa members to meetup with one another on the local level. This is explained in some detail in the Meetups page in the Guide to Kabissa Membership. If you have not read that lately I'd encourage you to review it now. If you have any questions about the overall plan for organising meetups, please post a comment to that page or contact me.

Importance of meetups in Web 2.0 - example of Barack Obama

Marc Osten of Summit Collaborative made an interesting contribution today, quoted below, to the NTEN Discuss email list. It's very relevant to the ideas Kabissa has been nurturing during the course of the last year for creating opportunities for face to face (F2F = face to face in Marc's jargon below) contact for people in the Kabissa community through local meetups.

Past Meetups

Kabissa has organized a number of meetups in the past, starting with Lagos and Abuja in September 2006 when Kim was visiting to attend the Digital World Africa conference in Abuja.

For reference, here is a list of Kabissa announcements inviting people to participate in meetups or reports after meetups took place.
