Akili Dada: training underprivileged young women for leadership positions in African society

Akili Dada

Case studies profile Kabissa members that inspire our volunteers and the entire Kabissa community. They are meant to provide Kabissa members with useful learnings and spark ideas and discussion.

In this case study, we tell the story of Akili Dada by highlighting its goal to train underprivileged young women for leadership positions in African society, the vital role that technology plays in its success, and the lessons it has learned in the process of building a network of young women leaders.

The Challenge

The Noah Foundation is participating in the april Global Giving fundraising challenge for a Social Business project in Madagascar - we are still in need of 2455 US$ to reach the goal!

The project will provide advanced training in handicraft for 5 poor mothers living in slums in Antananarivo and support them in establishing a small business and securing a sustainable income for them and their families: http://www.globalgiving.org/projects/educate-street-mothers-in-madagasca...

We greatly appreciate any help in building the future of these women!

Women in civil society in Africa continue to face major hurdles

Women in civil society in Africa are particularly prone to intimidation and harassment says a new report released today (PDF) by CIVICUS: World Alliance for Citizen Participation. CIVICUS calls on African governments, regional bodies, the international community and civil society to do much more to protect women human rights defenders on the continent.

On the "Pathway to decent work for women"

This year marks the 100th International Women’s Day on March 8th. The theme for this year is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women”. To celebrate the occasion, Seed of Hope has invited several women, including graduates from the program, to talk at their Nairobi centre and inspire the next generation of students as they undergo the training that will help them on the pathway towards either employment or self-employment.

Gender and ICT in Mali

dear all,

I wanted to share a link to some work that IICD partners have been doing in Mali which I have found truly inspiring. It has been a long and thorough process, and the impact on the women that were brave enough to speak up is significant. it has shown to me again that telling your personal story, however painful, is powerful and liberating. My sincere respect to the women from the Mali Genre & TIC group!
