Road Safety in Nigeria - Where Lies The Solution?

The recent road traffic accident that killed the National President of Nigeria's largest trade union, National Union of Road Transport Workers (NURTW) Alhaji Hamman Gidado and his top officials has further exposed Nigeria as among countries with ineffective road traffic safety policy.

For years, prominent Nigerians have fallen victims of road traffic accident with no enforceable policies and regulations to tackle the carnage. Among major cause of road traffic accidents in Nigeria are drunkenness, poor quality drivers, fake and sub-standard spare parts, bad roads and overspeeding.

THE INTRIGUES OF ROAD SAFETY IN NIGERIA

Road Traffic Accident (RTA) is a common occurence on Nigeria roads. Its effect is ernomous, but the more devastating is the gruesome pain its causes its victims before life is finally sniffed out. Nigeria: Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative Calls for Sustainable Road Safety Action

Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative (APRI) has called for a sustainable road safety action and urged the Government of Nigeria to commit to investing the money it collects from traffic fines on improving road safety.

APRI is of the view that “91 per cent of the money collected from traffic fines if spent on road safety would make an enormous difference and would save hundreds of lives. Road safety approach to date, in Nigeria, has been dominated by a blame, crime and punishment model, and as a result many people are mistrustful and convinced that the road safety agencies have revenue targets. Road safety really works when the public is onboard and decides for itself that safety is important - as has happened for seatbelt wearing. By removing the revenue gathering claims, we would change the focus of our road safety efforts from blame and punishment to injury prevention and education.”

Nigeria Federal Road Safety Commission Should be Accountable

The coalition of road traffic safety NGOs lead by Accident Prevention and Rescue Initiative has proposed a planned demonstration to protest the inceasant killing of road users with a view to drum up support for the restructuring of the Federal Road Safety Commission. However, the planned demonstration which will include traders, students and concerned people in Nigeria will be carried out when it is obvious that the Federal Government of Nigeria, under the able leadership of Dr. Goodluck Jonathan fails to address our petitions and demands.
