#africaisnotacountry - crossposted from saidia.org

The topic of my Ignite talk tonight is #africaisnotacountry.

What is Ignite Bainbridge?

In the words of fellow OfficeXpats member Leif Utne:

The first-ever Ignite Bainbridge! is less than 24 hours away! Join us tomorrow night (May 16) at the Pavilion for a fun and fast-paced festival of stories and ideas. Hear 14 Bainbridge Islanders present on topics ranging from African development to local currencies to karaoke. The Ignite format is simple: 5 minutes, 20 slides, 15 seconds/slide, auto-advancing. The fun starts with a mixer at OfficeXpatsat 6:30. Presentations begin downstairs in the movie theater at 7:15. Tickets are $5 at the door.http://www.ignitebainbridge.com/

Intro to #africaisnotacountry

My simple goal with this 5 minute talk – and this blog post and hopefully the video that will be shared online after the event – is to remind you that Africa is not a country.

In fact, Africa is a continent – a very large continent.

To put Africa’s size in comparable context – the land mass of Africa is big enough to contain the United States (including Alaska), China, and all of Europe.

Africa contains 52 countries and an incredible diversity of languages, cultures, and ethnicities.

Tallying the results of 2012 Kabissa core costs fundraising

This is a thank you post - a shout out to all the lovely people who responded to our appeals to help cover Kabissa's 2012 core operating costs on behalf of the Kabissa board of directors, volunteer team and members.

We are humbled by the faith you put in us and encouraged to redouble our efforts to continue our work to maintain and grow a community platform for African civil society on a low cost and sustainable basis.

Thanks to 50+ generous donors (see hall of fame below) we have met our goal! As of today, we have received just over $15,000. Pledges of over $6,000 are expected to come in during the course of 2012 via Aid for Africa and the World Bank Community Connections Campaign

Progress Update: Kabissa Gong Gong is Back, Governance Decisions, Trust Building in Africa

Thank you so much for your support and encouragement, especially during the past few months.

Kabissa has been steadily moving towards our new network structure led by stakeholders, run by volunteers, and supported by a dedicated online platform built in collaboration with partners.

Kabissa may be run by volunteers, but we need money to cover our core operating expenses and to fund much needed projects (see below) to upgrade and improve our online platform. Please keep Kabissa in mind when making your holiday giving choices this year.

Global Giving December Open Challenge: Deadline November 3rd

Global Giving

You are invited!

GlobalGiving is an innovative online fundraising platform. Since 2002, over 3,100 projects have raised nearly $33,000,000 from more than 120,000 donors.

We invite you to experiment with an online fundraising strategy, join the GlobalGiving community and  activate your online donor network this holiday giving season by participating in GlobalGiving's December Open Challenge!

Progress Update: Laying the Foundations for the New Kabissa

Now that Kabissa has begun receiving financial support from  stakeholders, it is important for us to begin providing regular updates so that you can understand how your contributions are being put to work to nurture and grow the Kabissa network. This is a crucial moment in the transition of Kabissa from larger project-oriented consulting organization to smaller volunteer organization providing a networking platform on an ongoing, low-cost basis.
