Volunteer at Shape Lives Foundation

There  are  several  volunteer oppportunities at Shape Lives Foundation in Ghana.

1) Volunteer in Moringa Farm

This project is a fantastic way to help develop sustainable, organic farming techniques while passing on a vital awareness of conservation issues to the new generation of children in Africa.

Read more about the farm on moringa.shapelives.org

 2) Volunteer in Orphanages

Extreme poverty, growing problems of HIV/AIDS, and different social problems make many kids orphans in Ghana.  These lovely kids are in urgent need of parental help and support. In Ghana , Shape Lives Foundation, does  support many orphanages  through  its  programs to continue  providing the much needed care for  the  orphans. Unfortunately, most of these orphanages are resource poor, under staffed, and are facing lots of problems to run their programs. Help is needed in everything from cooking and serving food to the children, to assisting with their basic education with sports and English lessons.

Role of Volunteer

The main responsibility of a volunteer at any of the orphanages is to spend time with the children and give them the attention and love they need. Volunteers will organize games and activities for the children and can help teach in the schools associated with the orphanage. Working in an orphanage requires motivation, energy, patience, and resourcefulness.

Skills/Qualifications Needed

There are no specific qualifications required for the orphanage project in Ghana . However, volunteers interested to work for orphans must have love for the kids and willingness to share their time and compassion with patience and high flexibility.

Video now online: Africa Roundtable featuring Lumana - March 2, 2012

I posted the video of the Africa Roundtable featuring Lumana to my Screencast.com account (direct link: http://www.screencast.com/t/7cUij9Cx1) for the benefit of participants who want to refresh their memory of what was discussed at the event and for others who were not able to attend and want to see Sammie Rayner's very interesting talk about Lumana Credit's work in Ghana and get to know the other participants. I also included below the list of participants - a great group of people that I look forward to meeting again soon. I apologize for the poor quality of the recording - we will do better next time, I promise (see lessons learned at bottom).

Registration for the next Africa Roundtable on April 6, this time featuring Kabissa, is now open! Click here to register immediately or here for more info about the roundtable before registering. Hope to see you there!

Rescue Aid Foundation Ghana - Sept 2010 Mission Report

We were a bit late to the airport to pick them though, but we made it there about 10minutes later than the scheduled time. They did waited for long because their flight arrived far earlier than scheduled time. It was joyous when we met them finally and we quickly loaded their bags into the car and drove straight to their hotel room in Tema, a city in the capital.

Harvesting the sun and wind is key for African development

Seminal Pan-African workshop about policies to support renewable energies.

Accra, June 23, 2010. “The solar radiation Africa receives could make this continent the Saudi-Arabia of the future”. With this bold statement, Hafsat Abiola, daughter of Nigeria’s late President Elect Moshood Abiola, summarized the results of “Power Kick for Africa”, a two-day strategy workshop on renewable energy policies. The gathering was organised by the World Future Council Foundation, based in Hamburg, Germany, in cooperation with the Energy Commission of Ghana. It brought together representatives from utilities, regulators, industry and civil society from ten African countries who are determined to expand their cooperation under the umbrella of the African Renewable Energy Alliance (AREA). Their main point of discussion was how policy-makers can support the harvesting of abundant renewable energy and thus open the door for sustainable African development.

“If we repeat the mistakes of the developed world by realising African development mainly on the burning of fossil fuels, climate change will have a disastrous effect on our countries”, said the Executive Director of the Regional Centre for Renewable Energy & Energy Efficiency of ECOWAS, Mahama Kappiah, at a press briefing in the Coconut Grove Regency Hotel, Accra. On the other hand, decentralised energy production through solar systems and wind farms could bring power to many remote regions, thus allowing development, creating jobs and benefitting health. Kappiah: “Solar power is reliable and can be installed easily and without the need to connect to the national electricity grid.”

Hello Accrans

The IDLELO open source conference (http://idlelo.net) is taking place next week in Accra, Ghana.

I'm heading over there to present on mobile application development with Drupal and it would be great if any fellow Drupalistas would be up for a Drupal get-together over drinks.
