Germany should honor its commitment to aid transparency - IATI steering committee meeting on July 7th!

Dear friends:

In 2008 Germany signed the International Aid Transparency Initiative(IATI)- a commitment of donors to provide timely, detailed, standardised data on development cooperation in an open and accessible way. The objective of IATI is to provide enable citizens in donor countries and particularly in recipient countries to hold donors and recipient countries to account for aid monies and to facilitate better planning of aid by recipient countries. Ultimately the purpose of IATI is to enhance aid effectiveness, curb corruption and promote ownership of all stakeholders.

Social Camp Berlin 2009 taking place this weekend

This weekend, Germany is celebrating the 20 year anniversary of German reunification. A big 4-day event is kicking off today with 7.5 meter tall giant marionettes at the Berlin town hall. Meanwhile, a huge group of German social media enthusiasts and NGOs are marking the anniversity in Berlin with Social Camp 2009, a two-day "un-conference" where the agenda will be set only at the start of the first day. I will be participating, and am greatly looking forward to the experience. It will be great to connect with all the amazing participants and to learn how Germans do barcamps!

I am also looking forward to seeing how Kabissa fits into this German social media "scene", and to inviting people here interested in using social media to "Connect for Africa" to join and help shape the Connect Deutschland group on Kabissa. If you are in Germany and interested in Kabissa, please contact me! Also, you are most welcome to join Kabissa (membership is free) and consider following @kabissa on twitter and joining the Facebook Kabissa Page.

So far the event and website appears to be very German language oriented, so I will do my best to share the learnings here for the benefit of the broader Kabissa community. Some useful links are below to get started:

Global Health Community Commits Over $630 Million in Aggressive Push for Polio Eradication

I received this mailing from the Gates Foundation today and was impressed by the size of the commitment and the partners involved - Rotary, Gates, UK and Germany. I knew Rotary was deeply committed to polio eradication but did not know the scale of the investments. I would be interested to hear more from Kabissa members about how this news will be received in Africa, in particular in Nigeria, and how the problem of polio is being addressed by local organisations in your communities. Also - how will innovative technologies be applied to address this seemingly intractible problem. -Tobias

SAN DIEGO -- Rotary International, the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, and the British and German governments today committed more than $630 million in new funds to fight polio, a crippling and sometimes fatal disease that still paralyzes children in parts of Africa and Asia and threatens children everywhere. In addition to pledging needed funds, leaders urged additional donors and leaders of countries where polio still exists to join them in an aggressive push for eradication.

The Gates Foundation is awarding a $255 million challenge grant to Rotary, which Rotary will match with $100 million raised by its members over the next three years. At the same time, the United Kingdom is giving an additional $150 million and Germany is giving an additional $130 million (? 100 million), both to the Global Polio Eradication Initiative (GPEI). Contributions from the U.K. and Germany over the next five years will not count toward Rotary's match of the Gates Foundation challenge grant.
