Busoga Rural Open Source & Development Initiative is an not for profit organization that works with government and the civil society in improving rural livelihoods. This is through the use of ICT and open development mediums that include effective knowledge sharing, information management and use of FOSS in rural settings.

When it comes to the mobile phone it seems there is no limit to their use. ClickDiagnostics, is a mobile solution to diagnosing common illnesses in rural areas where there are few or no doctors. The process uses images and basic symptoms for diagnosis and at the moment is used for skin and eye illnesses. As you can imagine ClickDiagnostics has the potential to make a huge impact on rural communities across the global south.

The service was officially launched last week in Kenya and will provide mobile phones AND connectivity to health workers and villagers in Uganda, Kenya and Tanzania. The service is jointly funded by Ericson and a Kuwaiti wireless carrier, Zain.

Energy supplies are one of the biggest problems facing African communities and businesses.  In some countries such as Nigeria, electricity in rural areas is non-existent and only occassionaly in the urban zones.   Businesses and familes that can afford it  rely on generators - those that cannot use parafin lights or candles.   UNIDO is supporting the introduction of Energy Kiosks in Kenya.
