The Coalition for an Effective African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights (the Coalition), which comprises African and international non-governmental organisations (NGO) working in and on Africa, individuals and national human rights institutions in Africa, was formed in Niamey, Niger in May 2003 to advocate for an effective and efficient African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights.

The Coalition will be holding a panel discussion on the African Court at the Royal Swazi Sun in Ezulwini, Swaziland on 11 May 2008. The themes for discussion are:

• Opportunities for a strengthened human rights protection mechanism: the African Court on Human and Peoples' Rights;
• The relationship between the African Court and the African Commission;
• The establishment of an African Court of Justice and Human Rights: its implications for human rights protection; and
• The opportunities for civil society in using the African human rights system to protect human rights

The panel discussion will be followed by the Coalition's General Assembly to do the following

• The election of the nine-member Executive Committee;
• Election of the chairperson of the Coalition;
• Election of focal points; and
• Determine priorities of the Coalition drawing on the strategic planning document.

EVENTOS DA COLIGAÇÃO PARA UM TRIBUNAL AFRICANO EFICAZ NA DEFESA DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS E DOS POVOS A REALIZAR À MARGEM DA 43ª SESSÃO DA COMISSÃO AFRICANA DOS DIREITOS HUMANOS E DOS POVOS, SUAZILÂNDIA, 7 - 22 DE MAIO DE 2008

A Coligação para um Tribunal Eficaz na Defesa dos Direitos Humanos e dos Povos ( a Coligação), a qual compreende organizações não governamentais internacionais e africanas (ONGs), assim como indivíduos e instituições que defendem os direitos humanos em África, foi formada em Niamey, Níger, em Maio de 2003, com o intuito de promover o estabelecimento de um Tribunal Africano eficaz para a Defesa dos Direitos Humanos e dos Povos.

A Coligação levará a cabo um debate sobre o Tribunal Africano no hotel Royal Swazi Sun em Ezulwini, Suazilândia a 11 de Maio de 2008. Os temas a debater são:

• Oportunidades para um mecanismo de protecção dos direitos humanos consolidado: o Tribunal Africano dos Direitos Humanos e dos Povos;
• Relação entre o Tribunal Africano e a Comissão Africana;
• Criação de um Tribunal Africano de Justiça e Direitos Humanos: consequências para a defesa dos direitos humanos; and
• Vantagens do sistema Africano dos direitos humanos para a sociedade civil na protecção dos direitos humanos.

Ao debate seguir-se-á a Assembleia-geral da Coligação, que abordará os seguintes assuntos:

• Eleição dos nove membros do Comité Executivo
• Eleição do presidente
• Eleição dos pontos focais
• Definição das prioridades da Coligação com base no seu plano estratégico
