If you want to be featured on the Kabissa frontpage, update your organization profile on Kabissa with a description of your plans for 2010. In particular, list events, projects and online campaigns that are coming up in the next few months that others in the Kabissa community will be interested in following. If you have not yet already done so, add your organization's logo as well and be sure you are linking correctly to your organization website if you have one.

If the organization or initiative you want featured is not yet in the Kabissa database, go ahead and add it now.

I will then select 5-10 organizations to feature with a logo on the Kabissa frontpage, on twitter via @kabissa and on the Kabissa fan page at http://facebook.com/kabissa

In the coming months, I'd love to come up with a more participatory approach to choosing the featured organizations - if you want to help or have ideas please contact me. Thanks!

Happy Friday, Kabissa members! I am in the process of refreshing the Kabissa frontpage, and would like to add some more organizations to the "Featured Organizations" block. Please let me know your suggestions on which African organizations or initiatives we should feature there for the next few months - and don't forget to say why! Organizations with especially exciting programs going on right now or events coming up will be given priority.

If you have not yet set up a profile for your organization on Kabissa, now is a great time! Log in at http://kabissa.org and click on the "Add Organization" from the member dashboard. You can add as many of your organizations as you like.

With best wishes for the weekend,

Tobias

P.S. - Do you use twitter? Follow @Kabissa and let me know so I can add you to the Kabissa Members twitter list. Thanks!

Sub Saharan Volunteers & Adventures are offering new exciting projects on the tropical island of Zanzibar. We currently have volunteers working in Stone Town in a HIV/AIDS Awareness program.

We have also had a new batch of volunteers go out to work on an important animal monitoring programme in Kenya. Mostly working with the Cheetahs, Lions & Bufalo!

We are now offering many more exciting projects which have been the highlight of some of our volunteers lives!

For 2010 we plan on expanding the company to incorporate more countries including Zambia, Botswana, Namibia & South Africa

We are planning on organisaing a trip for our volunteers to travel down from Kenya all the way to Cape Town for the start of the world cup to give them all a real sense on what Africa is about!

We would like to be placed on the front page as we think we are one of the best companies out there at what we do. We are now also offering combination placements combining volunteer placements with adventure trips which not many other companies do. We also hope to top our donation totals this year!

Kind Regards

Sub Saharan Volunteers & Adventures

Please consider featuring TrustAfrica, a pan-African foundation led by Africans. We support African initiatives to secure the conditions for democratic participation and equitable development throughout the continent. In doing so, we are empowering Africans to set the agenda for democracy and development.

Hi Tobias!

I would love to see the organization I work for, Flying Kites, on the featured organizations page. We were founded and continue to be run by college students and young motivated volunteers. We work to break down the traditional limitations associated with running an orphanage by refusing to compromise on our level of exceptional child care. We also challenge the traditional non-profit model and pride ourselves on our innovations and ability to create independent sources of funding as well as programs to involve America's youth in social change.

This year is particularly exciting for us for a few reasons:

We received funding for our first expansion, the construction of a school building on our site in Kenya. The project is on schedule so far and is due to be completed this summer.

We launched two of our fundraising programs this year and both programs have had a wonderfully successful pilot year. The first program, Adventure Challenges, (www.fkAdventureChallenges.org) asks supporters to fundraise and advocate for us. In exchange for their efforts they are rewarded with a free trip dependent on which fundraising target they reach. Our first trip will run June 13-27th and will take 32 confirmed participants to our site in Kenya and then on to summit the continent's highest peak, Mt Kilimanjaro. Trips planned for the fall and winter include climbing to base camp on Mt Everest, kayaking in Mexico, and surfing in Nicaragua.

Our college advocacy program, MyTurn, has also experienced great success in it's first year. Our documentary tour has taken the Northeast by storm and scheduled screenings throughout the region. In addition to screening our documentary, the tour sets up college advocacy and fundraising chapters with interested organizations and individuals.

Help us celebrate our successful year by putting us on your homepage!

What about the World Peasants & Indigenous Foundation (WPIO) who are working to end the exploitation of indigenous persons ("pygmies") in the DR Congo? They have an anti-slavery campaign every year where they work to try and free indigenous people who are victims of contemporary slavery.

Member Organization: Lumana Credit

This April and May, Lumana Credit partners with Literacy Bridge to
provide Talking Books to their clients in Atorkor, Ghana. Because many
of the villagers living in rural Ghana are illiterate, we want to take
our approach to microfinance and education to a medium that is
accessible to everyone. Curriculum from a native speaker will be
recorded on the Talking Books and will encompass a wide range of
subjects, such as health, agriculture, and business education, all
tailored to the client's needs from our Needs Assessment Surveys.

Lumana Credit has also partnered with Open Data Kit, an open source
data collection software, to build off our current data collection
software to refine how we survey and understand the communities we
currently serve. Google has also donated G1 phones to Lumana Credit
for our initial pilot program with Open Data Kit for this upcoming
spring.

Lastly, this April, Lumana will expand our microfinance program with
200 more clients in Ghana!

Lumana Credit is a microfinance institution based in Atorkor, Ghana.
Our approach includes a full business education curriculum that
clients go through before receiving their first loan, which addresses
key issues such as savings accounts, financial records, and writing
their own business plans. Lumana Credit has 145 active loan recipients
in 26 co-operatives since its inception in 2008.

Those that are active whether they know how to use the twitter or not. Like us at ACTWID, we donot know how to use the twitter.
We are seriously preparing to celebrate womens day on march 8th and we are also having very serious preparations of our post Copenhagen two days workshop here on climate change which are slated for 16th and 17th march 2010 at Ayaba hotel in Bamenda, Cameroon.
Immense thanks
Wendi and members of ACTWID

Hi Wendi,

Thank you for your kind response to our request for organizations to feature on the Kabissa homepage. Please see my other comment about next steps regarding getting your logo and news on the Kabissa homepage.

I wanted to also respond to your comment about twitter. It is fairly quick and easy to use for networking and sharing news about your activities, so I would suggest you check it out as time and Internet access permits.

See http://twitter.com to sign up for a free account, and once you have joined you can click a link to follow @Kabissa on our twitter page at http://twitter.com/kabissa

I blogged recently about twitter and how I use it to benefit the Kabissa community, and suggest you read my post about it, here:

Twitter, Twitter, Tweet, Tweet! Introduction to Twitter and Kabissa's Twitter Lists

Let me know if you have any questions or feedback!

Thanks,

Tobias

I am so pleased to see the many responses to my request for advice on organizations to feature on the Kabissa frontpage for the next few months. Such wonderful initiatives - it will be hard to choose!

Let me suggest the following:

Another way to get on the Kabissa frontpage more regularly is to contribute to the blog - you can crosspost announcements from your site on our blog, for example in the Kabissa Connect community group, the Website Hosting group, or create your own group for your organization.

How does this sound to you?

Thanks!

Tobias

PS: For more tips on how blogging on Kabissa works, see this step by step guide and screencast: http://kabissa.org/screencast-post-kabissa-blog

PPS: In case you were wondering: adding an organization to Kabissa is free, and provides you with a profile page with a unique subdomain (eg http://visafrica.kabissa.org), and makes you reachable via the map and database search. To add an organization, create a free account and log in, then click on "add organization" on the dashboard menu. Follow the onscreen instructions to add all the relevant information, which should take 10 minutes if you have the info ready. Once you have submitted the application, it will be reviewed and approved as soon as possible. You can then access it later by going to the subdomain you created or logging in and clicking on your organization name on the dashboard menu. Look for the Admin links on the left side to update your profile or to add people or a group to your organization.

Art Aids Art would like to be considered for a position on Kabissa's front page.  We are working with the community of Khayelitsha, South Africa to help people (especially unemployed women) to help themselves. eKhaya eKasi Art & Education center provides skills training and literacy programs, while drawing tourism income into an area with few economic opportunities.  An overview of the center's sustainable businesses can be found here on YouTube: http://www.youtube.com/user/ArtAIDSArt#p/a/u/0/-t5N3fsrqXw.

Happy Friday again, everyone!

I hope you all are keeping well and looking forward to the weekend. I have added several very interesting organizations now to the "featured organizations" section on the Kabissa homepage. If you would like to be added, please log into Kabissa and update your details, including a logo and info about what you are planning for 2010.

Let me know if you have any questions.

Warm regards,

Tobias

If any organization should be feature on the front page of Kabissa then it should be RAF. This is because we have KABISSA already as a feature on our front page which is viewed by several thousands of people each day.

If my reason makes sense then we plead that KABISSA takes this initiative to put us on their front page.

Selasi.

Hi Selasi -

I am always glad to hear from you. Thanks also for the interesting post today about water which I have promoted to the Kabissa frontpage and shared via @kabissa on twitter.

I don't have a very systematic method for choosing organizations to feature on the frontpage - right now it has to do with my own personal impression that it is important to feature a particular organization for a while. The ones currently on the frontpage I am particularly impressed with and have activities going on right now for which the added attention would be beneficial. It's not a link exchange, which doesn't really make sense for a network like Kabissa that has over 1500 organizations in our database that are all worthy of the attention they would get if they were listed on the Kabissa frontpage.

That said, I am not especially happy with the Kabissa frontpage myself. It needs to be redesigned to do a better job of featuring active organizations and making connections. Stay tuned for improvements coming soon, or if you'd like to help see (and sign up at) http://roadmap.kabissa.org where we are starting to organize the Kabissa roadmap.

Cheers,

Tobias

I would say those who made changes in the world should be added to the
sellected member organization of the Kibassa Highlights.

Thanks a lot,
Abdikadir Issa

It would be fantastic if Africa Action could be featured on Kabissa's
homepage!

We are the oldest human rights organization focused exclusively on
Africa. Today,
in partnership with activists and civil society organizations throughout the
United States and in Africa, Africa Action is working to change U.S. foreign
policy and the policies of international institutions in order to support
African struggles for peace and development.

Africa Action is a national organization, based in Washington, DC, that
works for political, economic and social justice in Africa. Through the
provision of accessible information and analysis combined with the
mobilization of public pressure we work to change the policies and
policy-making processes of U.S. and multinational institutions toward
Africa.

The work of Africa Action is grounded in the history and purpose of its
predecessor organizations, the American Committee on Africa (ACOA), The
Africa Fund, and the Africa Policy Information Center (APIC), which have
fought for freedom and justice in Africa since 1953. Continuing this
tradition, Africa Action seeks to re-shape U.S. policy toward African
countries.

in solidarity,

Michael
