CONNECT

All people associated with organizations on Kabissa (over 2000 people!) are now in the Connect group, which is a terrific place to introduce yourself publicly to the community and share information about your organization's activities, capacities and needs. The best content is promoted to the Kabissa frontpage and shared immediately through Kabissa's Facebook Fan page (http://facebook.com/kabissa) and Twitter (http://twitter.com/kabissa).

You will receive notifications of new posts by email to which you can respond instantly via email - your response will automatically be posted to the site as a comment. You will now also be able to view the latest content through the Kabissa site dashboard.

SITE TECH SUPPORT

Everyone registered at Kabissa is now subscribed to this private members-only group. Here you can ask questions and share insights into how best to take advantage of the Kabissa online platform to connect with likeminded people and organizations also working for positive change in Africa. You can also access and contribute to a Site Frequently Asked Questions wiki, our website "roadmap" and other how-to guides.

CREATE YOUR OWN GROUP

All people associated with organizations on Kabissa can create as many groups as they like for blogging or private collaboration. Posts to your own group appear directly on your organization profile page. Look for the "Add group" link on your profile page.

PRIVATE MESSAGING

We are pleased to present Private Messaging, which you can use to communicate directly with other Kabissa members directly on the Kabissa site. You can even have conversations with multiple people at once. You will get an email notice whenever a private message is waiting for you on Kabissa.

SPECIAL MAILINGS

We will continue to send occasional special mailings with timely information to subsets of Kabissa members that we think will be of particular interest to you. Please contact us if you have a timely event, project or opportunity that you would like us to share with Kabissa members working in a specific region or thematic area.

You can also update your profile at http://stars.kabissa.org to add your own groups for blogging or group collaboration.

Announcement of Conference

Art and Social Justice / 'The Art of Social Justice’ http://asjconference.dut.ac.za/default.aspx

Call for Papers

Durban University of Technology www.dut.ac.za and Art for Humanity www.afh.org.za invite you to a three day international conference on Art and Social Justice

Dates: 21 – 24 March 2010
Venue: Durban University of Technology (DUT), Ritson Rd Hotel School, Conference Centre,
Durban, South Africa

This major event…involving the collaboration between artists and poets… is consistent with UNESCO’s principle objective as regards the promotion of intercultural dialogue and cultural diversity. It will no doubt contribute to emphasizing the unique role of the arts as a means of dialogue, communication and understanding… giving its aim of promoting ethical values through artistic expression and creativity...
With these words, Koichiro Matsuura, Director General of UNESCO, asserts UNESCO’s support and patronage of the Art and Social Justice conference and the associated ‘Dialogue among Civilisations’ project (http://www.afh.org.za/index.php?option=com_content&task=view&id=278&Item...), a unique print portfolio that juxtaposes responses from visual artists and poets on issues of social justice. The exhibition will open on the 21st March 2010 at the Durban Art Gallery.

The conference aims to explore the role and relevance of the arts in addressing issues of social justice. In line with the objectives and principles of the conference organizers, Art for Humanity, the concerns of this conference are primarily directed towards advocacy. The conference serves as a platform for art practitioners and organizations to share experiences drawn from a variety of international contexts to discuss mutual concerns and find solutions to commonly experienced challenges.

The conference aims to arrive at a concrete set of resolutions which can be developed into a policy document about the role of the arts in affecting social change, cultural development and equity.

In line with the hosting institution’s commitment to academic research, the conference is secondly addressed at academic researchers with an interest in art and social justice, who critically examine relevant works in the fields of literature, visual arts, music and performing arts. Preference will be given to papers that explore theoretical avenues to the credible evaluation of public art and art projects directed at advocacy. This dual approach, which will be played out in parallel sessions, is intended to bridge a crucial gap, which frequently divides scholars and practitioners in the arts.

Thanks, Michael! I have been really pleased with all the responses to this Kabissa News post.

This is exactly the kind of sharing we want to see on Kabissa.

See http://kabissa.org/group/connect where you can post blog posts directly in the future.

Wish I could participate in this event in DC, but now I am in Berlin. If others do attend I'd be interested in a follow up note here on how it went. We are all concerned about what is happening in Zimbabwe. I have moved your comment to its own blog post where it will be promoted to the Kabissa frontpage and facebook: http://bit.ly/3ItpEy

In solidarity,

Tobias
