This was a project of Women and Tobacco Initiative in Africa sponsored by INWAT. We are the only Tobacco Control NGO, which was represented at the 11th WCTOH in Chicago from Kenya, and I am the person who represented the organization. Recently we have carried out researches on some aspects of tobacco growing in Kenya 3. Environment Environmental degradation is often because of man’s quest for self-development and the careless ways of a majority of the population. Often people tend to think of themselves in development disregarding the fact that others, which include animals, also need a share of the natural resources for life. Conservation of the environment is beneficial to all for the sustenance of life as degradation leads to poor quality of life. 4. Water and Sanitation SNN works in the informal settlements (slums) of Kisumu City where water and sanitation are two of the major needs that many people have no access to. Water quality and quantity have always been issues that can never be wished away. Despite the fact that we are sitting the largest freshwater lake in Africa, cases of water shortages in Kisumu is a very regular occurrence and that prompted SNN to conduct needs assessment in 1999 in all the informal settlements of the City. Priority issue was water followed by sanitation in Obunga, Manyatta, Bandani and Nyalenda slums. But the water shortages are not only restricted to the slums as one will find estates like Migosi have never had even a drop of water since they were constructed and inhabited. 5. HIV/AIDS 6. Agriculture Urban agriculture is one of the innovations in the recent past, which has gained currency and is benefiting the urban youth in the City of Kisumu 7. Education Education remains the most basic need and investment for the young persons of any country. |
