Glossary of Blogging Terminology
Blog: Blog is short for weblog. It is a website where items are posted regularly. Blogger: Someone who writes a blog Blogging: The act of writing posts on a blog
Citizen journalism: Ordinary individuals and community organisations or groups collecting, reporting, analysising and publishing news, information and opinion.
Post: A post is a single piece of text (an article, report, diary) you publish on your blog. It can also be either one of the following: photos, podcasts (audio), video or a combination of all.
Categories: Categories are used to index or organise your posts under category headings. You can select any number of headings for your blog such as: environment, health, education. You can use any words you wish depending on your organisation. Categories are like folders you use in Word. Although you can use as many categories for each post, too many can be confusing.
Carnivals: Carnivals are a way of focusing on a particular theme in your blog, a kind of blog event. Each edition of a blog carnival is in the form of a blog article that contains links to other blog articles on the particular topic.
Archives: Archives are where your posts are stored by date order and by categories.
Links: A link (short for hyperlink) is the address of another blog or website: For example if you wanted to link to the homepage of Tactical Tech you would use the link: http://www.tacticaltech.org
Community news sites: These are newsites that you can submit your blog posts or other organisations / people’s blog posts if you wish to publicise something they have posted. Examples of “community news sites” are Muti [www.muti.org] Digg [www.digg.com]. Technorati [www.technorati.com]
Search Engines: Google, Yahoo, Technorati.
Blog roll: A blog roll is simply a list of organisations and other blogs that you feel are useful and are related to your content.
Tags: Tags are like keywords which you had to your post. They are used to help searches and inform people about the content of your post. Tags are used extensively in blogging and social networking sites such as Flickr, YouTube, blogging communities.
Blog Directories: These are simply directories of blogs. You have to register your blog on each directory. Again directories are an additional way of publicising your blog and helping people find it by searching through directories.
