Netsquared finalists: Thanks for voting for Kabissa!

Kabissa - Netsquared Featured Project Kabissa is very pleased to have attained the finalist stage in the prestigious Netsquared Innovation Award competition. Netsquared is working to spur the adoption of new "social web" tools among organizations like Kabissa that are working for social change. More than 150 projects competed. Some extraordinarily interesting projects working to amplify voices in the global south also made it, and Kabissa's co-executive director team Kim Lowery and Tobias Eigen are very much looking forward to meeting the people behind those projects at the Netsquared conference on May 28-30, 2007. If you have not yet read our proposal, do so now! We are eager for your feedback: Kabissa 2.0: Strengthening the Social Web in Africa

Kabissa-Tanmia training partner ASUEEJ holding trainings in Marrakech

Kabissa-Tanmia training partner ASUEEJ will organize a training in ICT, for sixty (60) associations of the town of Marrakech working for sustainable development. These trainings will be done within its ?¢‚Ǩ?ìASSO-TIC?¢‚Ǩ¬ù project and is supported by the communal council of Marrakech, aiming at the reinforcement of the capacities of the local development actors.

The training will make it possible for organizations to reach, successively, four (4) goals:

Kabissa Garden Party in Berkeley

Click to view the evite and to RSVP!

At long last! Time To Get Online is available online!

Time To Get Online Kabissa's popular training curriculum, Time to Get Online, is now available online, fully searchable and easy to use. In the past, the materials were available as a pdf to download, but now you can search and browse any topic on integrating the Internet into your organization. Go now to http://www.kabissa.org/wiki/ttgo/start and start learning! Please send us your feedback to info@timetogetonline.org - the new online version is produced using a "wiki tool" like the collaborative online encyclopedia Wikipedia and is intended to facilitate constant improvement with input from readers and trainers that will be using it in workshops.

Take the eLearning Poll!

We need your input! Kabissa has received a grant from the Hurford Foundation to conduct two pilot eLearning courses, based on our Time to Get Online curriculum. Let us know what topics you would like to see covered in one of these first two courses by taking the eLearning poll on our homepage.

thumb_betsy_malcolmThree individuals helping over 900 organizations in Africa use technology to serve uncounted individuals in their health care, education, and in every other important aspect of their lives. Twenty years ago it would have been impossible. Today, Kabissa is doing it.

Three years ago, as I was reading Thomas Friedman's The World is Flat, I heard Kim Lowery, Co-Executive Director of Kabissa, speak and was immediately struck by what a perfect example Kabissa is of Friedman's flat world. The global reach of the Internet allows clusters of terrorists to project fear around the world and allows the customer service person discussing my local purchase to be located in Denpasar. But it also allows the small Kabissa team to effect positive change for thousands of Africans. What a remarkable development! And Kabissa is in the vanguard - providing Internet tools and services to grassroots organizations in Africa.

The very tininess of Kabissa appeals to me. It means my donations of time and money (and Kabissa welcomes both!) have a real impact. With no bureaucracy to support, every dollar or hour I give directly impacts the ability of a non-profit organization in Africa to improve someone's life. I am pleased to be able to help.

-Betsy Malcolm has been involved with Kabissa for the last three years. She has hosted two receptions for Kabissa in her New York home, and is a member of the event committee planning Kabissa's Wine Tasting for Change on April 18.

III. Kabissa In Action

Time To Get Online 2.0!
Kabissa's popular training curriculum is undergoing big changes this year. First, we have turned our training manual into a wiki , a collaborative Web site that can be easily edited and updated by visitors. This tool will make it much easier to access the training materials online, and allow our members to update sections with their own insights and improvements. In addition, the Hurford Foundation will be supporting us to run two pilot eLearning workshops - allowing us to reach hundreds more organizations through distance learning courses. Finally, we will be collaborating with TakingITGlobal to create a training curriculum for youth leaders.

partyHoliday Fundraising Campaign Wrapup
Thank you to everyone who made our holiday campaign such fun, and such a success. We held five events this year - including a small reception with Board Member Peter Eigen in New York, a wine tasting in Massachussetts, and several events in Washington, D.C. We had a great time reconnecting with longtime supporters, and making new friends - 60% of donors were new to Kabissa this year! Individual funding allows us to make our basic services available at no cost to hundreds of African grassroots organizations - thank you for your generous support this past holiday season. We had so much fun with these events that we've already had a few this year, and are planning a wine tasting in New York in mid-April!

mouseYes, Kabissa Blogs!
The Kabissa team is pleased to announce that we have finally joined "the blogosphere." We're excited to share our thoughts on technology news and trends, particularly as they relate to the work of African nonprofit organizations. In addition to the voices of the Kabissa team, keep an eye out for guest bloggers - we'll be inviting members and partners to share their thoughts too. Check us out at http://www.kabissa.org/blog

IV. Kabissa Member Themthumb_pinsbanathi Uses Technology to Support AIDS Orphans in South Africa

Thembanathi , which means "hope with us" in Zulu, is dedicated to providing support for orphans of AIDS and other vulnerable children in the region of KwaZulu-Natal, South Africa. Thembanathi currently supports projects on the ground that feed and educate children, and will also be starting an After-School Program for High School students in South Africa next year. This program will focus on activities that create behavioral changes and prevent HIV transmission, as well as skills development.

Thembanathi raises money for its programs through its jewelry company, Tanda Zulu - jewelry is made by women in income generation projects in South Africa. ICT is essential to Tanda Zulu, connecting jewelry production in South Africa to sales in the United States and donations back to South Africa. Tanda Zulu has a web site that allows Americans to buy online items handmade by people affected by HIV/AIDS in South Africa, helping people understand the significance of their purchase. They also use email to communicate with the women in the income generation project. Proceeds are donated back to Thembanathi's orphan projects in South Africa.

In addition to their Web sites and e-mail, they have used print technology to streamline their production methods. Women make the jewelry in their rural homes and can care for children as they work, saving time and money by traveling into the city just once a week. As many women don't have telephones, it can be difficult to communicate about new orders or changes throughout the week. Recently, to overcome this barrier, they created a catalogue of items for their Web site, giving a print copy to each of the women so they could use the pictures as a guide. They are now able to sell jewelry items of a specific color and style through their website, which has allowed them to raise more money.

V. Upcoming Events at Kabissa

  • April 13 - Dinner with Edetaen Ojo, Executive Director of Media Rights Agenda, Washington, D.C.
  • April 18 - Kabissa's Wine Tasting for Change , New York City
  • April 18 - Meetup of Kabissa members - hosted by the Board Member Neema Mgana and the Tanzanian Association of NGOs, Dar es Salaam, Tanzania
  • May 28-30 - eLearning Africa Conference , Nairobi, Kenya

Kabissa at the Nonprofit Technology Conference

Kabissa?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Kim Lowery, Co-Executive Director, and Liz Trautman, Member Relations Manager, recently joined over 1,200 nonprofit techies at the Nonprofit Technology Conference organized by NTEN in Washington, DC. Kim spoke as part of two panels at the conference: ?¢‚Ǩ?ìYou Don?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢t Need to Know Everything, Just What to Ask?¢‚Ǩ¬ù, for Executive Directors looking to manage technology in their organizations, and ?¢‚Ǩ?ìCase Studies in Open Source Software?¢‚Ǩ¬ù, where she talked about Kabissa?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s own experience in implementing Joomla, the software we use to manage the Kabissa site. To learn more about our experiences at the NTC, check out the Kabissa blog or keep reading for some of our session notes.

The Kabissa team leaps headfirst into the 'blogosphere'

The Kabissa team is now blogging at http://www.kabissa.org/blog - and we are all very excited about it. As our Dear Mimi described in her "Social Web" column in November, blogs are powerful new tools for reaching out to and dialogging with people around the world. Having a team blog at Kabissa will encourage all of us to share more regularly about our day-to-day experiences and the learning we are doing about ICT in African civil society. The Kabissa blog will also give us opportunities to take some of our fiery Kabissa debates to the blogosphere so others can join in the fun! Please join us!

Kabissa Welcomes Five New Interns

In January, five new interns joined the Kabissa team, so don't be surprised if you see a few new names in emails from us - Vicki Aken as Online Community Coordinator, Ryan Cargo as Special Projects Intern, Natalie McIntyre as Development Intern, Chris Perry as Online Community Coordinator, and Vicrum Puri as Member Relations/ Development Intern. They all bring a lot of enthusiasm and experience to Kabissa, which will surely be evident in our projects over the next few months.

Kabissa Member Survey Coming Soon!

The 2007 Kabissa Member Survey will be launched soon! Kabissa members: look for an e-mail in the coming weeks with instructions on how to participate. Last year's survey was a big success and we hope to hear from even more members this year. Help us improve our services by participating in the survey. As a thank you for your time, all participating organizations will be entered to win a prize!

Request for Proposals: Kabissa Online Community/CRM Project (CLOSED)

Kabissa is seeking experienced partners to assist in a new project to implement an Online Community/Constituent Relationship Management (CRM) system for its 900+ members in Africa. Based on Kabissa's specifications, completed in October 2006, we have determined three major pieces of functionality we will require in a CRM system - member management, e-mailing, and e-commerce. These pieces may be provided by one tool or multiple tools, but all must work well with each other. All tools must be extremely user friendly, especially from the front end

Kabissa Server Hard Drive failed yesterday

As many no doubt noticed, the Kabissa server, including all websites, email and mailing lists, was offline for nearly 24 hours on February 21st and February 22nd 2007. This happened because the main server hard drive failed completely. We were able to restore everyone's data from the most recent backup, which is the good news. The bad news, besides the nearly 24 hours of downtime, is that the most recent backup we had available is from Monday, February 19th, so unfortunately any e-mail sent and received and changes made to websites and databases between then and now are lost.

Please keep the following in mind as you begin using email again:
  • Since we are reverting to a backup from Monday, you will likely see email again that you have already handled. Meanwhile email that you had sent and received between Monday and the time the server went down yesterday will unfortunately be gone from your mailboxes.
  • Typically, mail is queued up to be delivered when a server is down, however as the server has been down for such a long time some mail will have bounced back to the sender. But rest assured that any email being delivered during the down time will either be delivered eventually during the course of today, or that it was bounced back to the sender - so the sender knows there was a problem with the server.
We are deeply sorry that this server failure has happened and apologize for the inconvenience it causes for Kabissa members. Please send any questions or concerns to support@kabissa.org and (while the server is down) also with a copy to kabissa@gmail.com.

Status Note: Unfortunately, the mysql database system is not working correctly and is still being worked on. This problem affects the Plesk control panel and email (it is currently not always possible to log in) though mail is still being delivered to the server. Database-driven websites hosted on the server will also be impacted, though they are currently mostly online.

Our regular webmail is not working - you can use our alternate system here: https://www.kabissa.org/mail
