WANTED!!! Good News Ambassadors

Over the past few weeks I’ve seen this article mentioned several times on Twitter. It talks about how NGOs and journalists choose to portray bad news about Africa as that is what is believed to guarantee to get the attention that will bring in funds.

In an online debate with @AKenyanGirl and @Terryannechebet I pointed out that this particular article had been retweeted (RT’d) by a large number of people and yet we struggle to get people to RT our news articles.

On the "Pathway to decent work for women"

This year marks the 100th International Women’s Day on March 8th. The theme for this year is “Equal access to education, training and science and technology: Pathway to decent work for women”. To celebrate the occasion, Seed of Hope has invited several women, including graduates from the program, to talk at their Nairobi centre and inspire the next generation of students as they undergo the training that will help them on the pathway towards either employment or self-employment.

Sports Development in Kibera

If you have ever wondered how sports can change the lives of young people, this article will give you an insight in to just what can happen. I was chatting to my colleague, Vincent Kegode, about the upcoming music festival that his organisation Kibera Mpira Mtaani is facilitating. As he explained about how the committee of KMM is now divided in to the “sports desk”, “education desk” and “environment desk” I asked to hear more about the work of the environment desk as all I knew was that they organise clean ups in the community.

Kibera Music Festival

Kibera Mpira Mtaani* started out as a football project but has always had aspirations of being more involved in the local community and helping the youth of Kibera to develop their talents. After the success of the 2009 informal schools football tournament and the first year of their library seeing eighteen students pass their KCPE (Kenya Certificate of Primary Education) thanks to KMM’s after school tuition, 2010 looks set to be even bigger and better for this Community Based Organisation.

Value for Money

Vision Africa's chairman, Bob Dowty, has updated his blog. His new post ponders whether our organisation needs to change its model or whether we can continue to be successful AND grow AND keep our overheads as low as 2%. These days donors demand value for money and administration costs can be a deciding factor when people are choosing who to give money to. How do we maintain our advantage and grow?
