Wireless gift to Senegal
A group of Silicone Valley engineers are working on a voluntary basis to bring solar powered wi-fi access to rural areas around the world. The company, Green Wi-fi iGreen Wi-Fi is
developing solar-powered, wireless antennas for laptops that are specially designed to handle the dust and heat and other inconveniences of life in remote areas.
Why Green WiFi? A number of entities focus on addressing the digital divide by providing internet access to developing areas. Green WiFi addresses one of the biggest barriers to success: the lack of reliable electricity in developing areas required to power the network. Green WiFi has developed a low cost, solar-powered, standardized WiFi access solution that runs out-of-the-box with no systems integration or power requirements.
This is such a brilliant idea that could be replicated in the West as well as in the Global South. Though electricity is not an issue comparable to some countries, solar access can extend the use of solar power generally and enable us to be free of our respective "national grids" and the associated costs.
