Quite a task for a volunteer. What am wondering about though: is it only run on Joomla, or are you also providing new sites based on WordPress? Just thought that WordPress used as a CMS may be enough for most (smaller) NGOs wishing to publish stuff online + well documented. Hope *someone* will jump in!

Hi jke - Thanks for writing. Kabissa is CMS agnostic - our server supports basically any type of content management software as long as it runs on the now fairly standard linux-apache-mysql-php (LAMP) platform. We do host WordPress sites for blogs, and Kabissa's own community site is run on Drupal. You are right that for many organisations a system like Joomla! or Drupal may be too much for them to handle - especially because of the constant security updates that are required.

Currently we are looking for Joomla! developers because we have dozens of sites hosted here that were set up several years ago and are now in need of security upgrades. In some cases the volunteers or web designers that created the sites in the first place are long gone and the capacity doesn't exist in the organization anymore to update the sites.

Kabissa does not have the capacity to upgrade them all, though we are happy to advise and be involved in the process. This week we will be starting to explore the work that needs to be done to upgrade the sites, and would love to be able to match up Joomla volunteers with organisations seeking help to upgrade their Joomla sites to the latest versions.

Cheers,

Tobias

To give an update on this - today I learned about yet another site that was hacked back on August 12th.. no new breakin but still a reminder of the urgency of addressing the security issues with some sites hosted on Kabissa's server. We've had one person get in touch but so far no volunteers have stepped forward and started assisting our members. Please drop me a line at support@kabissa.org if you'd like to help out. Thanks!

I realise this is an old post and not sure of any response to date that you have had to this but it might be worthwhile throwing the proposal up on Digital Point or Webmaster World forums.

There doesn't seem to be any response from the joomla community on this which is unusual.

Might be worthwhile providing a well written document to these businesses on old versions of the software that is specific to Kabissa's server.

People just don't realise is. It needs to be better marketed worldwide so people understand the maintenance side of things.

People buy cars and know they need to maintain them, so cms software should be sold in much the same way.

Cheers,

JoomlaBoy

Hi JoomlaBoy!

Thanks for checking in. I was disappointed that not more people responded to our plea for help back then - which I believe I crossposted here on Kabissa and on http://forum.joomla.org

I used to be fairly up to date with Joomla when we developed our own site and some sites for members using Joomla - back in 2004! But now we use Drupal ourselves so that's the CMS community I mostly lurk in.

Kabissa no longer provides website hosting, so that particular server-related emergency is no longer. However, many of our members do still need Joomla guidance so it would be awesome to get some Joomla experts to volunteer to provide guidance and support through the Kabissa Web Hosting group. I'd welcome a contributed wiki page about the benefits of Joomla hosting for African organisations, linking to the Joomla site for downloading releases.

Two questions for you that might be useful to kick off a discussion:

1) What's the latest status of Joomla as a tool and as a community in your view? How does it compare to Drupal and other site development options?

2) Which are the recommended hosting providers? Do you know of free or low-cost Joomla hosts?

Cheers,

Tobias

Hello, i am volunteering free support and advice on your joomla and Wordpress CMS website. Lets all help ourselves with whatever we can offer. You can reach me at: ossyu2001@gmail.com

Hi,

Thanks for your offer of help on Jooma issues in the Kabissa community.

I'd like to propose two things:

1) that you contribute info about Joomla to this wiki page:
http://www.kabissa.org/useful-tools-and-resources-web-hosting

2) that you add a new post to the Kabissa hosting group blog introducing yourself, introducing joomla, showing examples of some joomla sites in africa, and offering your help. I'd like to gather a list of kabissa memkbers with joomla sites and would appreciate your help with that also. pictures/screenshots would be compelling too I think.

Thanks! Let me know your thoughts.

Warm regards,

Tobias
