My friend @theresac shared this resource yesterday and I just had to try it immediately. It is a lighthearted and fun way to provide a really helpful service to website designers, who always need pictures of various sizes to place in pages they are working on.
I love the idea, and will add placekitten.com to the Useful Tools and Resources for Web hosting wiki.
According to placekitten.com, it is:
A quick and simple service for getting pictures of kittens for use as placeholders in your designs or code. Just put your image size (width & height) after our URL and you'll get a placeholder.
Like this: http://placekitten.com/200/300
or: http://placekitten.com/g/200/300
Perhaps one day we'll see copycat (pun intended) services at PlaceDogs.com, PlaceAliens.com, and PlaceGadget.com.
Seriously, though - this is a good idea and it would be nice to see it work for a range of different types of photos. I don't know how PlaceKitten.com works, but perhaps it could be used in conjunction with flickr.com or another photo sharing site.
