I just learned about two interesting grant opportunities for tech projects in 'challenging and repressive' countries that may be of interest to Kabissa members. From the Swedish International Development Cooperation Agency. Check it out, and let us know if you apply.

Two Calls for Proposals within Information and Communication Technology

Sida invites civic organisations and other relevant actors to apply for funding for initiatives where ICT is used to support Development, Democratisation and Freedom of Expression.

1. ICT-initiatives for Democracy and Freedom of Expression

The first call for proposals refers to the Swedish Special Initiative for Democratisation and Freedom of Expression, to be implemented by Sida 2012–2014. The initiative aims at supporting activities in which new technologies are used to strengthen democratisation and freedom of expression, primarily in challenging and repressive environments.

2. ICT-initiatives for Empowerment of Women and Girls

The second call for proposals is linked to the Swedish Government’s Strategy for Capacity Development and Collaboration 2011–2013. The initiative aims at increasing socio-economic equality between women and men, boys and girls, by ensuring equal access and opportunities to use ICT in an open society, in developing countries.

Deadline for applications is October 18, 2012. Only applications for projects to be implemented starting 2012 or 2013 and ending no later than 2014 will be considered.
