Dear friends and artists,

I'm developing a new project in collaboration with various international agencies and artists that blends the creative world with the humanitarian world around the issue of women/motherhood/maternal health.

Briefly, it's a new media "mash up" site that houses license-free music, film and spoken word clips by participating artists representing diverse genres, cultures and regions around the world. Users of the site will be able to mash up these clips to create their own advocacy PSAs. The site will be programmed so that these PSA's can be forwarded to networks, policymakers and development institutions. It will be focused around the UN's Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) and will be promoted extensively around the international community starting in the fall.

We're looking for creative content contributions of all genres, styles, etc by artists including filmmakers, musicians, DJs, poets, who work at the local and/or international level.

In exchange for your contribution, we will promote you, your work and your website, distribute your promotional materials at various events and strive to make linkages between two worlds which don't communicate with each other as often as they should, in my opinion.

Sounds really great idea. I am in NYC so we can gather the footage from the
UN etc. that might be useful as cut aways for the mash up.

Hi Lisa, 

I just heard on the radio about the BBC program below - I wonder if it might not be worth it for you to get in touch with them to see if you can partner with them. It would certainly be interesting to me to know if they intend to license these films under freely distributable Creative Commons license.

Thanks for the heads up Tobias on the BBC "My World" project. Looks really interesting and I'll contact them. I'm also interested to see if they will make the piece available in the public domain. I checked out their terms and references:

In consideration of the BBC agreeing to assess entries, each entrant - by entering the competition - licenses the BBC (for itself and those authorised by it) the exclusive right to use an entry for communication to the public (which includes broadcasting and internet use) and all other rights for the purposes of the competition. This right shall subsist until the end of the competition. 19. Entrants retain the copyright in their entry but grant to the BBC a nonexclusive licence to broadcast the entry across all media including any online platforms. 20. Entrants permit the BBC to edit or change entries in any way it may in its sole discretion consider necessary for the purposes of use in the competition and the broadcasting thereof.

I believe our MDGFive.com project takes a unique approach to fair use and the mash up concept. Any PSA created with our license-free clips can be broadcasted by anyone, anywhere (there will be bumpers that will connect it to our project but no restrictions on usage.) As well, we control the dissemination of our contributed creative material so that instead of people grabbing music, film clips, etc from unknown places on the internet and without reference to the artist, each download comes with information and contact of the artist, license-free!  

I would love to hear about ideas, concerns, etc from other members of the group on any aspect of this discussion!
