Online activism and campaigning
Erik Hersman has an excellent and informative post on Mapping Activism based on a recent presentation he gave at the "Where 2.0" conference in the US. You can read the whole post but below are some of the things that got me excited!
Geotate - If you love photography and gadgets then this is definitely a must. (auto tags photos to show location using GPS technology)AfricaMap - A kind of "Google Maps" for Africa which will include historical and contemporary data across disciplines to provide a Pan-African resource for students, academics, activists and the general public
Bug Labs - a "community electronics" device which will enable engineers to build any kind of device
without having to solder, learn solid state electronics, or go to China. Bug Labs envisions a future where CE stands for Community Electronics, the term "mashups" applies equally to hardware as it does to Web services, and entrepreneurs can appeal to numerous markets by inventing "The Long Tail" of devices.
DIY Drones - A site about all things on "unmanned ariel devices". What have arial devices to do with activism in Africa? Follow Erik's thought process and just think
what you could do with cheap UAVs in a post-disaster scenario.
Final words then you should read the post in full
The tools you create, and the work you do to map the world digitally, are incredibly useful. The world is only now beginning to wake up to the power of the digital, social and living map.
