March 7 Deadline: Let's win the Ars Electronica PRIX for digital communities for Africa

I have once again been asked to nominate projects for the Ars Electronica PRIX in the Digital Communities category, which is described on the Ars Electronica site as follows:

The "Digital Communities" category will honor important achievements by digital communities well as innovative artistic approaches towards web-based communities.

They seem to have a particular interest in artistic approaches, but are also concerned about political and social initiatives (description continues below). If you think this is you, please apply as soon as possible at the Ars Electronica PRIX site - the deadline is March 7th! Let me know if you intend to apply.

In the past, the prize has been won by some really neat projects, most of which I had not heard of before: The World Starts with Me, Wikipedia, Akshaya, canal*ACCESSIBLE in Barcelona, Spain, and Overmundo in Brazil. None of these are in Africa - so perhaps now it is our turn and Kabissa should make another attempt to win the prize!

And to continue quoting the description of the Digital Communities prize:

This category focuses attention on the wide-ranging social and artistic impact of the Internet as well as on the latest developments in the fields of social software, ubiquitous computing, mobile communications andwireless networks. Special attention goes to community-related “net.art”. "Digital Communities" spotlights bold and inspired innovations impacting human coexistence, bridging the geographical as well as gender-based digital divide and cultural conflicts, sustaining cultural diversity and the freedom of artistic expression or creating outstanding social software and enhancing accessibility of technological-social infrastructure. This category showcases the political and artistic potential of digital and networked systems and is thus designed as a forum for the consideration of a broad spectrum of projects, programs, artworks, initiatives and phenomena in which social and artistic innovation is taking place, as it were, in real time. A Golden Nica, two Awards of Distinction and up to 12 Honorary Mentions will be awarded in the Digital Communities category in 2008.

ARS Electronica

The World Starts With Me appears to be a Ugandan schools project but I may be wrong. I would also like to nominate the African Path online news and blogging community site started by Kenyan entrepreneur based in the US, Joshua Wanymama.

Hi Sokari -

Thanks for the correction - I clearly reviewed the sites this morning too fast! :-) I'd be interested in hearing more about how the "The World Starts With Me" project has been going, which looks really quite nifty.

Thanks also for the African Path nomination - I agree that Joshua is doing wonderful things.

I should point out that the Ars Electronica people have asked me for four bits of information about each candidate:

the name of the projects,
the URL,
the name of a contact person (if possible)
a short statement why you think the projects are interesting.

So..

Name of project: African Path
URL: http://www.africanpath.com
Contact: Joshua Wanyama
Statement: Let me just quote HASH on his blog post last January on the event of the launch of African Path:

Since I’m in web application development myself, it’s always interesting to talk to my counterparts. Joshua was no exception. He’s obviously a very intelligent person with big ideas and he made a comment that made me realize that he truly does understand what web application is all about.

“There is thinking and there is talking and there is actually doing something.”

I couldn’t agree more. There are so many people standing on the sidelines with their great ideas and wonderful conversations. I want to see more people like Joshua who actually get stuff done. A web application is never done - push that baby live at 80%, at least you’ll start getting some exposure and feedback to help you improve it.
