Keo Films slums series: request for information about Olusosun Dump in Lagos
Via Bill Minter of AfricaFocus.org (member profile), I received the following inquiry from a filmmaker in London looking to do an interesting documentary about slums in Lagos. I sent it on directly to members in Lagos and received quite a few responses. I also thought it might be worthwhile sharing it on the blog so that others can see it. Please get in touch with Cat at Keo Films directly if you have any useful information or insights, or are interested in getting involved in the project.
Keo Films are based in London UK, we make anthropological documentaries, for example a recent series where 2 doctors travelled round the world meeting local healers and discussing their methods, and another series where a geographer travelled to the hottest, wettest, dryest and coldest parts of the world and discovered what the people who live there feel and do about their environment.
We are developing a new series about slums – we feel they are often mis-represented in the ‘West’ as disgusting and not worthy of examination. We would like to change this and show that there are many positive things going on in very poor urban communities, strong family ties, music and arts. We would like to spend several weeks meeting local people in the slums in Lagos and filming the things that are important to them.
I am especially interested in the Olusosun Dump in Lagos. Is it true that a thousand people live on the dump permanently and that they have built a church and a mosque there? If anyone has ever visited this area and can tell me more about it, I would be very grateful.
Many thanks and best wishes,
Cat
