Ideas and examples of digital activism

Digiactive  provides a range of tools you can use for digital activism, advocacy, campaigning and documentation by tracking examples of their use from around the world.   For example the site below was created by a group of students to campaign against corruption in Azebaijan.  The tools they used were:

Website, petition, digital photographs, discussion board

An online petition was created to submit to government officials.  Within a few weeks they had collected thousands of signatures which they then presented to the government.   The site also included  information about corruption and the negative effects it has on the country and the future careers of the students.

A more recent example of digital activism was the case of a Moroccan, Fouad Mourtada who was arrested and sentenced to 3 years in prison for posting a joke about the King's brother on Facebook.  The tools used in this case were:

YouTube, web site, G-Chat, Skype, Facebook, digital video, digital photography

Fouad has since been pardoned and released by the King.

The struggle for decent housing in South Africa has been the most vocal movement in the post Apartheid period.  The Western Cape Anti-Eviction Campaign and the Abahlali baseMjondolo shackdwellers based in Cape Town and Durban respectively are two of the leading groups involved in the movement. Both groups have used their blogs to document their activities, their lives, protests against forced removals, police brutality and anti-poor legislation.   Tools used are:

Blogs, digital photography, digital video, social networks
