After two weeks of testing email discussions in Kabissa groups with only positive results, I have now made some changes to start encouraging Kabissa members to start using it more actively to connect, share information and help one another - directly by email. Please give me your feedback!

From now on, when members join groups at signup or via the groups directory, they now automatically start receiving new posts by email - and their replies to posts are distributed to all other subscribers and added to the site as comments.

Existing Kabissa Group members are all set to nomail by default - you can turn on/off email delivery or switch to daily digest mode anytime by logging in and going to the following link:

http://kabissa.org/og_mailinglist/subscriptions

A link to the subscriptions interface will be added to the menu soon too.

When posting new content via the site, members now see the following instructions so that it is clear that their post will be distributed to email subscribers:

Use the form below to post to the blog for this Kabissa Group. Note that your content will be visible to the public and appear in Google searches (unless this is a private group). Your email address will be shared with the other group members who have email delivery turned on. Group members can also post new topics by email and reply to emails received directly or reply to all to share follow up comments with everyone in the group. Click here to manage your own email delivery options for Kabissa Groups.

Please note: the discussion list feature on Kabissa Groups is under active testing and not everything works as you might expect. If you are a Kabissa Group manager, edit your group settings to specify the email address used for posting by email and which content types (if any) your group's members are allowed to post. Please report bugs, problems and feature requests to the Kabissa Issue Tracker. Thank you!

Apologies if you ran afoul of this and saw an error message, but the link to the email subscriptions settings in my post had an extra space at the end. I have now fixed this on the website. Try it again: http://kabissa.org/og_mailinglist/subscriptions I look forward to your feedback on this new feature! Warm regards, Tobias

Hi Tobias,
I think this is a good feature and it should encourage people to participate
or at least keep most members aware of what's going on.
Let's see how fast the participation rate improve and let's also pay
attention to feedbacks.

Cheers,
-Ghislain

Thanks Ghislain!

As always, I appreciate your support as we make all these changes. I also am
looking forward to seeing how the new email discussion list feature affects
participation, and hope that it helps to empower our members by letting them
participate from where they already spend most of the time online - their
email mailbox.

One challenge I am concerned about is how people will react to the
transitioning from a blogging format to an email list format. For example,
in an email list, people expect to share their email addresses with other
participants, but that is not the case with blogs. With our new system,
email addresses are not shared online (where they could be "harvested" by
spammers) but they are shared with email subscribers.

Another concern is with "moderation" of groups - when it's a blog with
comments it is easier to block spam or delete posts that are not appropriate
or needed, which we have to do all the time. With email lists there is a
freer flow of information and all group members have to be more careful
about using proper list etiquette on an ongoing basis. This will take more
attention by group managers, who will have to act more like mailing list
moderators to make sure everyone understands the rules and follows them.

I'm particularly curious about that with groups like this one (Kabissa News)
that has over 3000 members. Only group managers can send new messages to
kabissa@groups.kabissa.org but anyone can reply to have a conversation about
what we post, like you and I are doing now.

Warm regards,

Tobias
