(French, Yoruba, Hausa versions below) Beside the physique, Language is the most outstanding of the features that distinguishes homo sapiens from other creatures.

Through language, human beings communicate with one another - and even with their creator. Through it, they bring meaning into their life and beautify their environment.

The phrase, In the Beginning there was Word, God was the Word expressed in diverse ways by various scriptures underlines the primacy of the tongue as far as existence is concerned. Words, needless to reiterate are bricks with which a language is structured, expressed and made meaningful.

Of course, there are as many languages almost as there are tribes or ethnic groups in the world. Embodied in each people's language is the collective memory of that people. Through their language, they express themselves; their past experiences, present travails and triumphs as well as their future aspirations - hopes and fears  - along with steps being taken or to be taken for the purpose of addressing such ontological imperatives.

Every social scientist knows that the more of a people's language at a person's disposal, the greater one's possible knowledge or understanding of the people in question. And the more knowledge of the people of the world we have, the better for us all. For, in such knowledge regales chances of greater understanding which in turn can lead to a better appreciation of each other's fears and respect for each other's feelings. Logically, what flows from such scenarios would be easy resolution of potential conflict areas, thus leading to greater peace in the world. Peace, understanding and knowledge, needless to reiterate, are a primary condition for survival and sustainable development anywhere in the world.

An important arm of the UN, UNESCO alerted that by the turn of the century, hundreds of languages would die. The quantum of the collective memory and the inherent knowledge that would be so lost can only be imagined.

We in the AGENCY for an enhanced SOCIO-ETHICS AND TRADITIONAL ORDER (ASETO) dread the possibility and consequence of such monumental loss. It is in an attempt to avert or at least mitigate the extent and/or enormity of the possible loss that impelled us into embarking on this project called ASETO's Indigenous People's Indigenous Languages Project - AIPILaP for short.

The first aspect of the project entails the listing of as many indigenous people as we can from all over the world as well as the language they speak. We will later go a step further by being briefly historical concerning the said people and their language. Countries where a given people reside and lands to which the given language has spread and/or spoken would also be mentioned. In each instance, we shall do all that is humanly possible in the circumstance to avoid the pecuniary politics attached to or associated with the people and/or their language.

Our hope is that the modest effort would compliment that of UNESCO and that of other organizations and individuals working at preserving our linguistic heritages.

We are not aware of a single source from which all languages of the world can be accessed. Part of our challenge in embarking on this project is to provide such a simple source so that researchers, policy makers and the general public can have information on any language and its purveyor at a mere click of a button.

It is hoped that efforts such as this would enable us all further appreciate how really united human beings are. A realization that we speak a common language (as defined by the organ, tongue, which is an important determiner of any verbal expression). Such a realization may impel division - and discrimination mongers to moderate their ways.

But above all we hope that through this and related projects, collective knowledge inherent in various peoples and their languages would be available for the general edification of mankind. Welcome on board. We are by no means assuming that we have even half of the world tribal groups and languages on our list yet for they are quite many.  . For instance, Vanuatu, (a small country of 13 islands and 70 islets in the Melanesian archipelago with a population of just 200,000 has about 106 languages according to UNESCO).  We wanted to wait until we could have a near exhaustive list. But we felt that we could start and keep updating. For this reason, we shall appreciate suggestions and links to sources for improving our list and the entire project itself.

Furthermore we are open to suggestions and contributions in any form so long as it is on the stated objective. You can reach us on aseto1@yahoo.com or africa_aseto@yahoo.com

Bienvenidos.

Nigerian government is already known for its abuse of human right. Freedom of expression is de jure but never de facto in Nigeria. Even though its clearly spelt out in the 1999 Nigerian constitution. We hope that FOI(freedom of information)bill will be passed into law soon to protect journalists, like Elendu.
