CIVICUS is and we hope to see you there!
This is an open invitation to all our members, partners and friends to participate in a workshop/ open space event, titled "The Space for Civil Society: Global Trends."
CIVICUS and other leading civil society groups have observed an increase in the shrinking of the space in which civil society operates. In 2009 and 2010, CIVICUS observed a growing number of restrictions on civil society in about 90 countries. This trend has been acknowledged by the Secretary General of the United Nations and the UN Special Rapporteur on Human Rights Defenders, as well as other key human rights organisations and activists around the world. The clampdown on civil society is real and it poses a huge threat to social movements, preventing them from achieving their objectives and reducing atrocities world wide. At the end of 2010, CIVICUS concluded a study on the challenges faced by women in civil society in Africa, which contributed to this negative and worrying conclusion. The study was based on direct inputs gathered from female human rights defenders and organisations working on women's rights across the continent, as well as extensive desk research performed to showcase these concerns. CIVICUS will therefore be leading an open space, workshop event at the World Social Forum, with its members, partners, friends and interested parties in order to discuss these increasingly problematic issues and negative concerns.
The CIVICUS workshop will therefore focus on the following:
1) Investigation into the practical and policy orientated restrictions and limitations affecting civil society's ability to freely carry out its activities. This will be done through a discussion on the CIVICUS "Civil Society: the Clampdown is Real: Global Trends 2009-2010" report.
2) A presentation and discussions on the findings of the CIVICUS Civil Society Index (CSI) on findings on the external environment in which civil society operates, and implications this data holds.
3) A presentation and discussions on the environment in which Women Human Rights Defenders operate in Africa.
4) Advocacy strategies, solidarity alliances and coalition building for a global campaign to improve civil society space, as well as to actively to seek out solutions.
Please send an email to David Kode, CIVICUS Policy Officer, Email:david.kode@civicus.org or Megan MacGarry CIVICUS Convening Officer, Email:megan.macgarry@civicus.org if you plan to take part in these discussions.
Thanks and See You in Dakar

Hi Dear All CIVICUS
I do wonder why the civil societies are very surprised and concerned
about the Egyptian crisis yet never considered about the thousands of
lives always getting lost in the amid of the continued conflicts in
Somalia. The civil societies do suffer in Somalia for the sake of
their duty of getting those felt to be in siege back to board focussed
life. We do always face intimidations from the various conflicting
parties in the country but I never saw the world determining the
situation we are going through.
Thanx
