Digital World Africa 2006The Kabissa community was well represented at last month?¢‚Ǩ‚Ñ¢s Digital World Africa conference, held from 11-13 September in Abuja, Nigeria.?Ǭ† The conference brought together representatives from civil society, private sector, and government to discuss the future of ICTs in Development and Education in Nigeria, with particular focus on the One Laptop per Child Project. Kabissa member and partner Growing Businesses Foundation co-organized the conference, along with the Club of Rome and the Nigerian Communications Commission.?Ǭ† Kabissa's Kim Lowery attended, as well as representatives from 9 other Kabissa members.



Civil Society Youth Forum

Before the official conference began on 12 September, a special Youth Forum?Ǭ† was held where youth civil society organizations had the opportunity to share their experiences, ideas, and concerns about the role of ICT in their own communities.?Ǭ† Kabissa members at this event, and throughout the conference, included:

One Laptop Per Child Project Announced

Of particular excitement at the conference was the announcement that Nigeria would be the first recipient of laptops as part of the One Laptop Per Child project (also know as the $100 Laptop).?Ǭ† The first test shipment of one million laptops should begin arriving in Nigeria in November.?Ǭ† Reaction at the conference was generally positive, though many people, especially from civil society, raised concerns about the details of the project implementation, in particular the distribution plan and the localization of the project to fit Nigeria.
