About AHURTOD

The Association of Human Rights and Torture Defenders (AHURTOD) is a human rights and relief organisation which is non-governmental (NGO), non-political, and non-discriminating. It is a Non-Profit-making Organisation with the vision of working for the practical realization of human rights in Cameroon by protecting the country’s vulnerable and deficient population.

AHURTOD was formed in March 2004 by NKEM Bellamin Fonkeng, a recent graduate from the University of Buea and some other 15 dynamic young persons. AHURTOD was formed with the aim of defending the rights of persons irrespective of their nationality, class, colour, race or social status. At the same time, our organisation pays specific attention to women and children who are the vulnerable population with respect to human rights abuse and torture in Cameroon. These cruel vices, mostly affecting women and youth, hinder personal development, equality, peace, and human progress in general.

The Association was launched with a strong commitment to act and speak for children whose voices have been silenced by hunger, injustice, inhumane treatment, lack of parental affection, sickness, unjust tradition, illiteracy, accident, gender bias cultures, natural disasters, etc. Misery and trauma which have let many children and adolescents adopt delinquent and deviant behaviours as a kind of consolation and escape device. AHURTOD works to help youth live a better life.

The mission of AHURTOD: Equality, Justice for All and Peace. We believe that, if there is equality at all of the levels in the human cycle, and if all humans are treated with dignity, justice and fraternity – understanding that the brotherhood of man transcends the sovereignty of nations – then, there will be peace of mind, peace in heart and social peace for a world termed JUST and free from condemnation.

AHURTOD and the use of ICT

Put it simple, ICT – Information Communication Technology, has become an integral part of AHURTOD’s work in recent times. This is proven in the wider extent of its communicating and exchange with other international partners in the field of human rights, good governance and peace.

In recent times, with the aid of Justice Group International, AHURTOD discovered KABISSA, becoming a network partner of this inevitable organisation was not enough, but AHURTOD saw a break through when it was offered a Starter Pack hosting package for FREE, this was when our much needed exposure took root. Grace to our much needed presence online and a better identity, as a local African NGO per say, we are now able to communicate and reach out to more audience with confidence.

Another positive worth saying is the publishing of our news items which we had difficulties in doing so. From the numerous feed backs we have been receiving, we are ever more confident a wider community and actors in relevant sectors is getting to know us better. With the notion ‘development work is not a one man think’, we hope to through the use of ICT strengthen the collaboration we are enjoying with other NGOs around the world to make this planet worth leaving.

As per the future plans of AHURTOD with the use of ICT, we hope to start a free online training programme for Human Rights and Conflict Analysis in the future. With the aid of volunteers and organisations like KABISSA we feel very positive this would make a difference in Africa.

One advice for African NGOs not yet exploring the enormous benefit of ICT especially those who are privileged to belong to KABISSA, give it a try and rest assure your organisation would never be the same. It is important to note that for the first time AHURTOD visited the KABISSA’s website, it was sure that an impact would be felt. This is because for beginners to advanced users, a solution and a service is provided FREE OF CHARGE. Try this invaluable service to mankind through such a wonderful initiative like that of KABISSA and similar organisations wasting positive time and resource to make us survive.
